The trip that started it all

A few years ago I did something I had been putting off for a long time: I took a sabbatical. I needed to step away from the routine, recharge, and remember what it felt like to be curious about the world. So I booked a flight to South-East Asia, packed a rucksack and set off, on my own.

Nervous before take-off

I would love to tell you I was fearless. I wasn't. In the weeks before I left, the excitement came with a steady hum of anxiety. I would be alone, in places I had never seen, on the other side of the planet. What if I fell ill? What if a booking fell through, or I ended up somewhere I didn't feel safe, with nobody to call and no idea where to turn? The unknown can be thrilling, but it can also be daunting, especially when you are the only person responsible for getting yourself through it.

Then the adventure took over

And then, somewhere along the way, the worry simply faded. I found myself right in the middle of the adventure, and it turned out to be one of the best trips of my life. Every early start, every long journey and every wrong turn was worth it, every single second.

I made friends along the way: fellow travellers and locals who went from strangers to companions over shared meals and long conversations. I learnt that the world is far kinder than our worries suggest, and that I was more capable than I had given myself credit for. I came back to Europe full of energy, in high spirits and with a head full of stories.

The part nobody talks about

Looking back, one thing still surprised me: how much work it took to get there. The preparation took months.
